In the annals of stories that are too weird not to be true, add this little ditty… We’re the proud owners of a house full of rescued stray dogs. And I do mean full! Needless to say, we have a big yard that’s fenced in to keep the inmates from escaping the asylum. They all spend ample amounts of time outside, which led to the strangest thing I’ve ever witnessed in 30 years of pet dog ownership. The certifiably insane pooch in question is named “Haley,” a deceptively normal name for a decidedly abnormal canine. Little did we know when we lovingly adopted ... [continue reading]

How to stop a dog from barking – it’s the question that many dog owners have, but very few have an answer to. Learning how to stop your dog from barking can be very easy, or very hard, depending on the attitude of the dog, the reasons that the dog barks, and probably most importantly, your attitude. To stop a dog from barking, you will first have to pin-point why the dog barks, what it barks at, and what the dog desires that will make it stop barking. Why A Dog Barks There are generally two reasons that a dog barks – it is the nature of a dog to bark and defend its territory... [continue reading]

Let us first get rid of some myths about dog crates and make a few comparisons to the other quality dog crates that are available to you. Let first look at the black epoxy coated crates. Now that the puppy has settled into its new surroundings it is time to start working with him on basic obedience training. Before starting the basic obedience training with the puppy, it is very important to build a good rapport with him so that the puppy is much more willing to learn from you. As the puppy’s owner and trainer, you should establish this rapport during the first forty-eight hours after bringing the puppy home. You can establish the rapport by talking to the puppy, playing with him in a loving manor and grooming him. Do not attempt to train the puppy other then house breaking ... [continue reading]

Designer dogs? These dogs are showing up everywhere. No these dogs are not sold in malls with names like Calvin Klein. You also won’t find these dogs on the cover of Vogue. What you will find as you research these designer dogs is that a lot of chance goes into getting what you want out of a litter. No matter what cute name they are given, they are a cross-bred canine. Some of the more popular varieties are the “poo” versions and the “oodle” breeds. Cross breeds that have done well in the past include the “Schnoodle” which is a Poodle and a Miniature Schnauzer, the “Malti... [continue reading]

Oh, howling dog! Is it a full moon or what? Oh, why is it that dogs howl? They howl at impending thunderstorms which is what our dog is doing right this very second. His behavior is edging me ever closer to insanity. Why can’t he just pretend the angels are bowling? I just can’t take the ”ahroo, ahroo, ahroo” anymore. What does that mean anyway, “ahroo, ahroo?” He howls in the middle of the night when the coyotes are out and howling at the moon. Is he trying to say,” Please come and take me away from these crazy humans. They feed me this slop that they call do... [continue reading]

House breaking your new puppy can be a very difficult and stressful process to both you and your new puppy. Crate training your puppy is one of the easiest ways to potty train. The key to crate training your puppy is reward them when they’ve done well. This reward can either be with a puppy treat, or praise. The more love and patience you have for your puppy will greatly impact the amount of time this process takes. You must first implement a firm routine that your puppy can understand, and learns to depend on. When you are not actively with your new puppy, you should restrict her to a smal... [continue reading]

Mice are probably one of the few creatures that can enable us to jump on the first available chair and emit a piercing shriek or stand nearby cooing as we gaze at their cuteness. Maybe it has something to do with their coloring. After all, white is the color of innocence and purity. Most pet mice are white, while their counterparts, field mice are gray in color. White mice, one of the least expensive and smallest pets to own, are relatively easy to please when it comes to feeding time. Create a mix of canary, parakeet, or sunflower seeds, guinea pig or rabbit food, and uncooked oats. To... [continue reading]

I have heard myself say it a hundred times, “don’t worry she won’t attack your children, just your dogs.” Somehow, each time I am convinced that this will make people feel better. You would think that after the reaction I get that I would just keep my mouth shut. Maybe saying it comes from working too long in the legal field. I should really just have some of my old bosses write up a “Disclosure of My Dog’s Desire to Bite Your Dog’s ***” or an “Affidavit Verifying that I Can’t Control My Dog’s Alpha-Femaleness.” Amaz...
