We all love our dogs and our dogs love us. They show us affection by slobbering us with kisses but when accompanied by canine halitosis we may not be so accepting of our pet’s affection. Most dog owners are all too familiar with what can only be referred to as horrendous dog breath. Teeth and gum problems are the most likely cause of canine halitosis. Tartar buildup and plaque can give your pet’s breath its unpleasant odor.
The best treatment is prevention. Periodic checkups with the veterinarian and good dental hygiene can prevent tooth decay in your pet. Halitosis can also be a sign of a medical condition. Illness can cause your pet’s foul breath. Tooth decay that is left unattended can lead to other health problems as well.
You can get a jump-start on your pet’s dental health by feeding him a healthy diet. While some pet owners prefer to feed their pet canned food since they believe it to be more nutritious, they should also supplement their pet’s diet with dry food for dental health. Providing your canine friend with dog biscuits will help to remove tartar. Giving the animal bones or rawhide to chew on can help to prevent a buildup of plaque.
Peridontal disease is a common problem of the teeth and gums resulting mostly from normal saliva and bacteria on the teeth. Food particles also become lodged between the teeth. Over time the debris collects and the problem progresses. Providing the pet with dry food, biscuits and bones helps to exercise the gums and remove the plaque buildup that forms on and between the teeth.
You can brush your dog’s teeth if you feel it is necessary but if the animal is fed a healthy balanced diet and the dog is allowed to gnaw on a large bone frequently, such action should not be needed. Of course if severe tooth decay exists, removal of the affected tooth or teeth could be required. If your pet suffers from a bad case of halitosis take him to the vet for a checkup. If all is well, then keep him that way with a good diet and give him plenty of bones to pick, with his teeth that is.
