The cat we know today as the Birman is thought to have originated in the country of Burma, where this unique feline was considered sacred, and kept as the companion animal of priests. One look at the stunning good looks and crystal blue eyes of the Birman and you will understand just why these beautiful animals were held in such high esteem.
The Birman is known as a large and stocky cat, possessed of a long and silky coat. The coat of the Birman is not as thick as that of other long haired breeds, such as the Persian, and owners will also be happy to know that the coat does not mat. The Birman has a light coat, preferably with a golden cast. In fact it may appear that this unique feline has been dusted in gold.
The points of the Birman, located on the face, tail and legs, will be darker than the rest of the body, with the accepted colors being seal point, lilac point, blue point and chocolate point. It is the eyes of the Birman, however, that are perhaps the most striking feature. The eyes are nearly perfectly round, and beautiful blue in color. A heavy jaw, full chin and Roman nose complete the regal look of this legendary breed.
